Tackling Youth Unemployment in the Illawarra

Release Date: 2/12/2016
Youth unemployment is one of the most significant economic and social issues currently facing the Illawarra region with 16.6% of youth (15-24 years) in the region unemployed compared to the NSW average of 11.5% and the national average of 12.5%.

The Illawarra Youth Employment Strategy (IllawarraYES) is a partnership between industry and government agencies aimed at improving employment opportunities for young people in the Illawarra region.

As an example of how the IllawarraYES is helping connect employers' needs with job outcomes for your people is the IRT Young@Heart program, an innovative training program designed to address critical shortages in the aged care sector. A recent job market report on the sector found there were four times as many jobs in ages care than there were workers,

The nine-week Young@Heart program provides accredited aged care training and work placements with IRT Group, Blue Haven Care and Warrigal. The training was a partial Certificate III in Individual Support, delivered by IRT College. On 21 November, eight students graduated from the program and are now currently looking at getting traineeships in their new careers.

The Young@Heart training was funded by Training Services NSW under its Targeted Priorities Prevocational and Part Qualifications Program. For more information about IRT's Young@Heart program please visit www.irtcollege.org.au.
