Make the Illawarra Count in Census 2016

Release Date: 8/08/2016

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) expects that more than two-thirds of Australian population will complete the 2016 Census online as a further move towards the digital economy.

Everyone needs to participate in the Census no matter who you are or where you are. The Census provides an invaluable snapshot of the national population every five years.

Executive Director Illawarra Business Chamber, Chris Lamont urged participation in the Census to make the Illawarra count as information gathered about the Illawarra in the Census will be used to identify the region’s future health, education, transport, infrastructure and business needs.

“Census data for the region influence’s government decision making and spending well into the future,” said Mr Lamont

“Data from the Census is not just information for governments it can also provide critical statistics for business and is often used as part of business and feasibility assessments,” Mr Lamont said.

While paper forms will still be available for those who need them, more than 15 million people are expected to complete the Census online using a unique Census login.

“Enabling people to complete the Census online is an important innovation which will reduce the cost of the Census to taxpayers, improves convenience and reduces paper forms for a greener solution,” said Mr Lamont.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics wants to make it easy for everyone to complete the Census and is available to answer questions and provide assistance. If you have any questions or need help contact 1300 214 531 or go to

“The ABS says the Census can be completed in around 30 minutes for an average household. By taking 30 minutes residents of the Illawarra and surrounding areas can make a real difference in providing essential information for our future,” said Chris Lamont.
