Improving employment opportunities for young people in the Illawarra

Release Date: 27/07/2016

The Illawarra Business Chamber says the Illawarra Youth Employment Strategy, Illawarra YES, launched on Friday by the NSW Government, has great potential to improve employment opportunities for young people in the region.

“The Chamber is proud to have contributed to the development of Illawarra YES. The Illawarra YES strategy is a package of practical actions, the first step in a long term partnership which aims to connect young people entering the work force with jobs in growing industries, ” Illawarra Business Chamber Acting CEO, Jo Spencer said.

“What makes the Illawarra YES different is the focus on local jobs and the skills and qualification needs of those jobs. Through the strategy young people will be prepared to respond to the needs of jobs available locally.

“Youth unemployment is a major challenge for the Illawarra and its young people. It is immensely encouraging to see business and government working together with young people to take up the challenge,” said Ms Spencer.

“The Chamber looks forward to working with industry colleagues to contribute to the plan to connect young people with the right skills and qualifications so they can be best prepared to secure jobs within key industries across our region.”
