Illawarra selected as pilot region for Origin’s new energy saving program

Release Date: 8/03/2012

On Monday 5 March, Origin, Australia’s largest energy retailer, launched Local Savers – a new grants program that will help local businesses and community groups become more energy efficient.

Local community organisations  can apply for a $1,000 grant to contribute towards making their facilities more energy efficient. One grant will be awarded each month until August 2012 and Origin’s Energy Efficiency Advisor, Anne Armansin, will visit grant recipients to identify ways the grant can be used to reduce energy use.

Wollongong is one of the first two towns in NSW to have access to the Origin Local Savers program, which the company hopes to roll out across NSW later in the year.

Origin’s Energy Efficiency Advisor, Anne Armansin, who has been offering energy-efficiency advice to Australian households and businesses for more than 20 years, said that there has been strong interest from the Illawarra community for energy efficiency advice.

“When I have visited Wollongong in the past, there has always been a positive response to energy-efficiency advice and initiatives we have offered, so the Illawarra was a natural choice to pilot the Origin Local Savers program.

“We are pleased to have the support of the Illawarra Business Chamber to help us select the monthly grant recipients. I look forward to meeting the monthly grant recipients over the coming months to help them on their sustainability journey,” said Anne.

Illawarra Business Chamber CEO Mike Leask was at the official launch to lend his support to the program. “The Origin Local Savers program is a great way to do something good for the environment that also lowers the cost of running your business. The IBC is all about helping businesses improve the way they operate, which is why we are pleased to support this initiative by Origin,” he said.

University of Wollongong Innovation Campus was the venue for the launch, which showcases  the type of energy efficiency practices that Origin Local Savers would like to encourage more community organisations to adopt.

Applications are now open to local organisations and businesses that provide a service to the local community, including retail outlets, small businesses, service organisations, sporting groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations.
