Illawarra flexes ICT muscle

Release Date: 28/09/2016

Today’s official opening of the new NEC Australia office in Wollongong is testimony to the potential of the region as an investment destination of choice for the ICT and related industry.

Illawarra Business Chamber Executive Director, Chris Lamont, said the investment by NEC is providing employment opportunities for ICT professionals and harnesses the benefits of the University of Wollongong, Innovation Campus and the unique lifestyle benefits of Wollongong.

“This is really is a perfect pairing, you have the University of Wollongong producing some of the finest ICT graduates in the country collaborating with NEC a leading global technology solutions and services company,” said Chris Lamont.

The $25 million investment by NEC is expected to see the creation of approximately 100 jobs and confirms the region has both the expertise and capacity to be a destination of choice for technology investment.

“The region has so many benefits but undoubtedly access to highly skilled employees/university graduates, strong workplace retention, lower operating costs and the capacity to offer employees an affordable and quality lifestyle are key components providing this region a clear advantage,” said Chris Lamont.

Deloitte Access Economics in a report for the IBC states that if the Illawarra achieved parity with rest of NSW in the knowledge services sector, some 3,000 jobs could be created in the region. The report also notes that ICT will play an increasingly important role in the region’s future employment growth and the professional services sector is central to facilitating and guiding this economic transition.

“Advancements in technology applicable to the knowledge services sector should be seen as a positive disruptor that will assist in generating employment across the region. The investment by NEC is practical example of what can be achieved,” said Chris Lamont.
