IBC welcomes RDA funding news

Release Date: 6/06/2012
The Illawarra Business Chamber has today welcomed the news that two Illawarra projects have received funding in the latest round of grants from the Federal Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund.

“The $5 million grant for the Mall will cover around a third of the cost of the upgrade,” said Mr Mike Leask, CEO of the Illawarra Business Chamber.

“This grant will free up additional funds to direct at either further upgrades to the Mall or invest in other public infrastructure in the Council area.

“The Mall upgrade is a key component of revitalising our regional city and this money means the process can now either be sped up or allow for additional investment in the project.

“Wollongong City Council, local Federal MPs, Ms Sharon Bird and Mr Stephen Jones, and RDA Illawarra should all be congratulated for their efforts in obtaining this funding.

“Today’s positive news provides a great springboard for Council’s newly established Economic Development Advisory Council, which I am looking forward to being a part of.

“It was also good to see the Federal Government recognise the importance of the community sector to our local economy, by delivering a $2.6 million grant for the Southern Community Hub and Youth Foyer.

“This new centre will play a critical role in helping residents and community workers in Shellharbour and I congratulate Narelle Clay and her team at Southern Youth and Family Services for securing these funds.” concluded Mr Leask.
