Smoke taint assistance important for wine industry

Release Date: 13/02/2020
The Hunter Business Chamber has welcomed the State Government’s announcement of access to free smoke taint test for wine growers affected by bushfire.
The Government announced today that grape growers in affected areas would be able to access funding of up to $1200 to test their crop for smoke taint.
“The Chamber sees this announcement as significant because it not only provides some direct assistance to affected growers but acknowledges smoke taint as an impact of the bushfires,” Hunter Business Chamber CEO Bob Hawes said.
“We hope this will assist growers in accessing further assistance if they can demonstrate that their business has been significantly affected.
“Wine production is worth more than $500 million to the Hunter Valley, with at least an equal amount in flow-on benefits from tourism, so it is important to see support for this part of the primary sector.”
