Minister for Small Business visits the Hunter

Release Date: 11/11/2019
Small businesses in the Hunter had the opportunity to meet and hear from NSW Finance and Small Business Minister Damien Tudehope on Friday when he visited the region as a guest of the Hunter Business Chamber.
Mr Tudehope was the keynote speaker at the Hunter Business Chamber’s Business Development Forum lunch at Marina Views, Wickham, where he addressed guests on a range of business issues, from the impact of the drought to the range of programs available to assist owners and operators to grow their businesses.
The Minister also touched on reforms to payroll tax, the need to streamline approvals for business, vocational training needs and moves to make it easier for government departments and agencies to buy supplies locally so they can support businesses in their area.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the NSW economy, with 765,000 businesses operating across the state,” Mr Tudehope said.
The Minister promoted the Government’s recently launched ‘Buy Regional’ campaign, an online platform that allows retailers and producers in drought-affected areas to market their products to a wider customer base.
The campaign is encouraging people to buy Christmas gifts through the portal to help support businesses in regional communities.
Earlier, Mr Tudehope visited The Business Centre in Newcastle where he met with owners and operators of a range of innovative Hunter businesses that have successfully scaled up with the help of the Government’s $30 million Business Connect program.
These included the Grainfed Brewing Company, a Newcastle craft beer producer; agtech company Bee Innovative, which employs technology that maximises pollination to increase yield; and Early Start Speech Pathology, a growing Wallsend health services provider.
The Minister also visited Newcastle Airport, where he received an update on the proposed runway upgrade and other expansion plans.
