Maximising regional NSW's Chinese tourism market

Release Date: 4/09/2017
The Hunter Business Chamber will join with the Tourism Industry Division of the New South Wales Business Chamber in hosting a roundtable tomorrow to investigate ways to maximise regional NSW’s Chinese Tourism Market.

Despite the rapid expansion of Chinese tourism overall, there is a marked disparity between the overnight market share achieved by the Sydney metropolitan area and regional NSW:

•    Less than 1 in 20 international visitors to regional NSW were Chinese, compared with almost 1 in 5 international visitors to Sydney
•    Only 5% of Chinese visitors to New South Wales disperse beyond the Sydney Metropolitan Area
•    Only 7% of all nights that Chinese stay in NSW are spent in regional locations.

These statistics demonstrate that destinations and operators in The Hunter and across regional NSW are not fully benefiting from overnight dispersal out of Sydney by the Chinese inbound market.

Hunter Business Chamber CEO Bob Hawes explained that the time has come to develop some real strategies to address the issue.

“This is an important initiative for the Hunter Region and we are looking forward to working with our members to develop a plan that can maximise the Hunter’s value from the Chinese Tourism Market,” Bob said.
