Investment Attraction Package for Regional NSW a good start

Release Date: 12/09/2018
The Hunter Business Chamber believes the NSW government is on the right track to help attract businesses to regional NSW following the announcement yesterday by Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro.

Chamber Chief Executive Officer Bob Hawes said that the Chamber believes incentives like the Investment Attraction Package set the right tone but governments and business need to do more to attract investment in regional NSW.

“These measures will go a long way to lifting the gaze of decision makers to look more closely at regions like the Hunter and we need to make sure existing businesses also get a leg up for growing locally and the government seems to be trying to do this” Bob added.

“The Hunter region knows it is not enough to boast competitive advantages including an abundant land and building supply, a skilled labour force and an extremely competitive cost base, we need incentives such as those announced yesterday to put NSW on the same page as other states where these incentives have been common place.

“It is also pleasing that government again recognizes businesses have been calling for payroll tax relief, access to a skilled workforce and simpler approvals systems” Mr Hawes said.

“We support establishing a professional investment concierge to assist with navigating compliance and approval pathways; this is not always easy and is often costly. Combining the provision advice with practical help on how to get funding should be a real benefit,” Mr Hawes said.

“Capital is now more mobile than ever before and to attract investment and jobs this region needs to tap into these measures and do more to promote the benefits the regions offers business,” Mr Hawes said.
