Chamber welcomes Draft Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan

Release Date: 30/11/2017

Chamber welcomes Draft Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan despite lack of detail on special infrastructure contribution

The region’s largest business group today welcomed the newly released Draft Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan, following a briefing by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment including Chief Planner Gary White, along with “urban planning guru” Greg Clark.

Hunter Business Chamber Chief Executive Officer Bob Hawes said the document is a substantial 100 pages long, and that the Chamber is looking forward to evaluating the detail and preparing a submission in response.

“Based on today’s presentation, the general context about why a metro plan has been developed and the broad features of the plan seem to encompass elements that are important to business and the community.

“However, the plan lacks detail on the proposed special infrastructure contribution (SIC);
we note that the Department is still developing this element.

“As the SIC will be a key component in both delivery of the plan and the broader Regional Strategy, we would prefer the Department takes their time to get the detail right – as they are doing with the proposed Urban Development Program which will inform discussion around land development.

“The Department also revealed its proposal to establish a Committee for Greater Newcastle. This concept is something the Chamber believes can work well and could by synergistic to the Department and Hunter Development Corporation delivering the Plan.

“The Chamber has always known this region can achieve more with collaboration than it can by working in silos and the concept of the Committee for Newcastle is consistent with our thinking to make sure there is a focus on leadership, delivery and action, with business well and truly in the mix.

“We’re looking forward to working with a broad group of stakeholders to evaluate and review the Draft Greater Newcastle Metropolitan Plan and develop the best approach for the Committee for Greater Newcastle,” Bob said.
