Chamber congratulates Morrison Government on victory

Release Date: 20/05/2019
The Hunter Business Chamber has congratulated the Scott Morrison-led Coalition on its return to government and looks forward to a period of stable government restoring business confidence across the region and state.
“Back-to-back state and federal elections in NSW have created a climate of business uncertainty, which has been reflected in responses to the NSW Business Chamber’s quarterly business conditions surveys,” Chamber CEO Bob Hawes said.
“We know that many businesses have held off important business decisions like expansion, employing additional staff or bringing on extra product lines until the election results were known.
“With the Coalition looking like being able to form a majority government, and both sides having introduced measures to stem the revolving door of leadership seen over the past decade, we can expect greater stability in government, to the benefit of business and the wider community.”
Mr Hawes said business would also benefit from tax concessions and initiatives to increase skills training, which had been announced in the April federal budget.
“We are pleased that the Government has a mandate to roll out promised reforms such as tax breaks, expansion of the instant asset write-off program, extra funding to help businesses break into export markets and increased incentives for employers taking on apprentices,” Mr Hawes said.
Mr Hawes said voting patterns in mining communities suggested that both parties would have to carefully manage policy and messaging on climate change to ensure that the consequences for jobs and energy security were well considered and communicated.
“These communities are hearing mixed messages – they want to be reassured that environmental policy is underpinned by sound economic and employment outcomes,” Mr Hawes said.
