Chamber applauds announcement to commence direct Trans-Tasman flights

Release Date: 18/07/2018
The Hunter Business Chamber today welcomed Newcastle Airport and Virgin’s announcement to commence direct international flights to Auckland.
Virgin Australia, Newcastle Airport and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack MP, today announced that the new flights will make Virgin Australia the first airline to provide an international service from the upgraded Newcastle Airport terminal.
Virgin Australia will operate three return services per week during the peak holiday period from 22 November 2018 to 17 February 2019, creating a gateway to the rest of New Zealand as well as the greater Hunter Region.
Hunter Business Chamber President Jonathan Vandervoort said this is a key step in building the region’s capacity and capability in this important part of the economy.
“We’re hoping the route will provide flow-on benefit for local businesses, tourism, the visitor economy and the community. Newcastle Airport has worked hard over many years to build an efficient hub connecting our region with the world.
“The Chamber has been advocating and supporting the provision of stronger transportation links for our region for a long time. This announcement is a watershed moment and we encourage businesses and the community to get behind the service in the hope that its success will lead to similar initiatives in the future,” Jonathan said.
