Business welcomes Defence Export Strategy

Release Date: 30/01/2018

Yesterday’s announcement, from Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne, about the Defence Export Strategy has been welcomed by Hunter businesses.
Hunter Business Chamber CEO Bob Hawes said it is great news for the Hunter’s economic prospects and future.
“We note that the Strategy adds to the Government’s defence industry policy by establishing a system to plan, guide, and measure defence export outcomes.
“Further, the Government correctly recognises that new markets to diversify are needed to
help unlock the maximum potential of Australian defence industry to grow and innovate.
“The Chamber agrees that exports will provide our defence industry with greater certainty of future investment and support high-end manufacturing jobs for Australians in the future.
“We have a very strong defence presence and capability in this region and it is well placed to help the Government meet is objectives for 2028.
“The strong networks, capabilities and infrastructure in our region provide the ideal environment to establish the proposed Australian Defence Export Office right here in the Hunter, establishing a focal point for defence exports and driving implementation of the Strategy.
“Through Hunter Defence, the Chamber and HunterNet recently made submission to the Standing Committee on State Development regarding the defence sector in New South Wales. The submission urged State Government to acknowledge and support existing defence related precincts here in the Hunter, including the Port of Newcastle and the aerospace industry,” Bob said.
